Social Assistance Program

E-mail Print PDF
The strategic thrust of RMC’s social programme is to restore the dignity of refugees and asylum seekers by facilitating their access to basic humanitarian needs such as education, shelter, food and non-food; and health facilities most importantly basic education for children and assistance on how to acquire proper refugee and asylum documentation.

Shelter

We facilitate access to temporary shelters managed by either faith-based institutions or government supported under the Department of Social Development.  The period of stay ranges from 3-6 months.

Food

Through food and other non-food donations, RMC assists the most vulnerable among refugees and asylum seekers in Johannesburg. These usually include needy families, minors and unaccompanied children and others whose conditions are critical. Our teams of committed and dedicated volunteers drive this very important service at the Walk-in Centre and home visits programme. Our volunteers carry out needs assessment among different families and other groups of clients to help them develop the best possible intervention.

Emergency Health Care

One of its core activities is facilitating access to emergency medical care to asylum seekers and refugees who do not have government legal documents. This is done through our referral services to MSF Clinic at the Central Methodist Mission or private doctors with whom we have special arrangements.

Education

Through partnership with Sacred Heart College, a Catholic Marist School, an afternoon was launched for refugee children who are of school going age, but unable to access the government schools. The School covers Grades R, 1 - 5.  With support from a Dutch donor, children at the school are given uniforms, stationery and food.  This is premised on the word of a great leader, Nelson Mandela who once said, “Education is the engine to personal development, it is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mine worker can become the head of the mine, that the child of a farm worker can become the president of a nation.”
